Vellayani is situated 7 km away from the famous Kovalam Beach of Thiruvananthapuram. Vellayani Lake is the largest fresh water lake in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
Vellayani lake is well-known for his much protected natural eco-system. The lake is blessed with the variety of flora and fauna. With a boat ride, you can enjoy and explore the picturesque view of the lake.
There are many interesting stories associated with the origin of Vellayani lake. One among the most popular legend is this; once, a beggar came here in search of water. He visited a saint who was meditating in here. Unfortunately, his vessel was nearly empty.
The saint took the last drops from the pot in to his palm and threw them as far as he could. During this act he uttered a small prayer. Surprisingly, the area of the land gradually turned into a big lake till where the drops fell. That lately named as Vellayani Kayal (kayal is the native usage of lake).
The water from Vellayani lake is used for drinking facilities and irrigation purposes. Vellayani lake is a must visit place if you takes a trip to Kovalam beach.
Every month is best to visit this beautiful location. In August, Boat racing (Vallam Kali) will be conducted as part of Kerala’s major festival ‘Onam’.
There are no tourist facilities and shops in Vellayani lake side.
